  • You can call me uncle

Yup, as of sometime around noon today, my brother Travis is a father, and Chad and I are uncles. Congrats to Mr. (and Mrs.) T.

I think Kelly is coming to pick me up and I’m going to be headed out to the hospital way out in Hillsboro for a quick visit before I return to work… so I can see the tiny pink squishy little man.

Yeah, it’s a boy. 🙂 I don’t know much else (because it seems that with guys, all the details about pounds, ounces, inches, and hours in labor sort of fall off the radar, heh) other than the little man is healthy.

I’m going to nickname him Bart… because today (in about a half hour from now) I was supposed to be going with coworkers to see the Simpsons movie, on the company dime. D’oh!

  • Mass-transit mess, Goose, Brewfest part 2

Today Kelly and I went to the Oregon Brewers Festival… well, Kelly was headed straight there, I had to meet my friend Tim at the Goose Hollow Inn for a reuben sandwich first, since he’s in town from Arizona through the weekend. Getting into downtown was easy, getting to the Goose was a mess.

Portland lightrail intersection workDue to TriMet‘s work to add a new MAX line that will go north-south, the old east-west MAX service was disrupted, heavily. Coming from the east at around 12:30pm, Kelly got off at the Skidmore stop and met up with Ghost Dog and others at the brewfest, and I kept going. Well, I kept going for two more stops where everyone was forced off the train, herded into a packed bus that was to shuttle folks up and around the construction area to a waiting train on the other side that would continue west. When I got off the bus, the train wasn’t there yet, and rather than wait, I decided to walk to the Goose. As I started walking, a train backed down the line towards the waiting station, but I figured it would take a while to get everybody on and get moving so I kept walking. I ended up making it all the way to the Goose (from 10th and Morrison to 19th and Jefferson, about a mile) and had been sitting down for 10 minutes before the train came by the Goose Hollow stop. Glad I walked.

While at the Goose, my ‘friend’ Tim gave me gifts, and embarrassed me in the process (as usual)… tons of small items wrapped in pink Disney wrapping paper (featuring all the female characters of the animated Disney films). I tore into them as quickly as I could, trying to make the horrible wrapping paper go away, opening item after item of hot sauces, powdered pepper seasonings, salsa mixes, and even a bottle of German curry ketchup. After we ate and sat for a bit, I packed everything up, and walked back to the waterfront (both my backpack and myself weighing more than when I’d arrived).

Packed south tent at OBF 2007Once I got to the brewfest (probably around 2:30pm) the line to get in was huge, and when I finally got inside it was packed full. It took Kelly and I texting back and forth for a bit until we found each other. Between the transit delays, the walking in the heat, and then the massive crowd of people I wasn’t exactly in the most festive of moods. The event was as packed as it had been last night, and just as annoying (long lines for beer, annoying people, every 30 seconds everybody in the tents would scream and yell in unison for no reason, like a much more obnoxious version of the wave). Kelly very sweetly went and got me a beer, and we found a couple spare chairs under the south tent to sit in. I quickly realized that I wasn’t going to be there long, and when we briefly met up with Mr. and Mrs. Ghost Dog and discovered that they were on their way out the door, I knew I had to leave.

After one more beer Kelly and I ran away and did the MAX + bus thing to get back home. After getting in (around 5:30pm) and unloading my pack, Kelly and I decided to stay home and relax for the rest of the night, so I went to the store, picked up some beer and some things to grill, and am enjoying the peace and quiet of the back yard. Ahhhh. Much better.

  • Brewfest and Moon

Today after work I met a few friends at the Oregon Brewers Festival, the big shindig held at waterfront park filled with, oh, how shall I say this… many of the kinds of people I wouldn’t ordinarily associate with. You know the kind; loudmouthed, backwards baseball cap, muscle shirt wearing, girl oggling neanderthals. The lines were long, people cutting in front of people, and once you got to the end and got your spendy little beer, nobody made way so you could get out of the line.

All my complaining aside, I did have a couple good beers, namely Terminal Gravity Brewing‘s TG Tripel, a nice, roughly Belgian style that was balanced and tasty. I also had a really tasty golden and a dark ale that I liked quite a bit, though I was so busy fighting the crowds that I wasn’t paying close enough attention.

Hopefully when I go back tomorrow (yeah, I’m going back, meeting GD again) it will be more like last year and not today.

Afterwards, Miranda and Brian and I went to Moon & Sixpence… Brian wanted (needed) food badly, and fish & chips sounded good to him, so we took the MAX out there and hung out for a couple hours before I hopped the bus home. Fun night overall, and relaxing at the Moon was what I needed both after the work week and the waterfront brewfest experience. 🙂

  • Lion and Shanghai

Went to the Thirsty Lion pub for a work event (same one as last year, see this post) after work. Ran into both some ex-coworkers as well as some ex-employers (from the first web nerd job I got, way back in 1996). Also spent time hanging out with a couple coworkers that I don’t know quite as well, which was fun. Overall I had a fun time.

Kelly met me at the Thirsty Lion towards the end of the event, just as my brother Chad sent me a text saying he and his girlfriend were nearby at the Shanghai Tunnel (again, the pattern is almost the same as last year, just without the concert). So we went down there and were met by a couple of coworkers. Had a blast hanging out. Happy birthday Katie!

  • Menomena & Decemberists @ Edgefield

Menomena at EdgefieldWent to a great show tonight at McMenamins Edgefield, I got to see a great local band who I’ve been wanting to see for a few years called Menomena, and for the third time, The Decemberists. I hadn’t seen a show at Edgefield before, and it was a pretty fun experience, especially with the great weather today. While a bit warm, it was a great place to see a show. Menomena were fantastic, and were as great (or better) live than their records.

Decemberists at EdgefieldDecemberists also put on a fantastic show, though I was saddened not to see Lisa M. from Talkdemonic on stage with them like their last show. It was still a helluva good time. Decemberists did play Eli, the Barrow Boy and The Mariner’s Revenge Song (neither of which they played at the last show I saw them at) and during Mariner’s, they brought out some people under a giant whale outfit, which was a lot of fun. Was a very fun show, and a fun evening.

  • Tyson & Sujata’s Wedding Reception

Tyson & Sujata's ReceptionLast night Kelly and I attended a lovely wedding reception for our friends Tyson & Sujata, who were married a few months ago in Tulum, Mexico. The event was held at a house in Milwaukie which belonged to a family Tyson has known for years. It was a beautiful setting… the back yard overlooked the Willamette river, there was a fold-out dance floor, hanging lights, and even some landscape lighting (colors pointed up at the trees that surround the yard).

There were roughly 150 people there (by my guestimate), of which Kelly and I knew or recognized 30 to 40. Had a good time… I ate way too much of the Mexican-style buffet, still feeling full today honestly. We left kind of early though (close to 11pm) because Kelly was exhausted from her weekend of classes, and I was uncomfortable being all dressed up and stuffed with food. Ugh.

More photos here and here. Congrats again to the happy couple!

  • Saturday through today

So yeah, I didn’t get around to blogging about events from last week / weekend until recently (like, past couple days). Between being busy and just plain lazy, it just didn’t get done. So I apologize if any of you were reading my posts in your feed reader where I’d say “today” when I was writing for the days in question. What can I say, I’m lazy. To recap from Saturday through today, here’s what I’ve been up to.

Saturday my brother and sis-in-law threw a party at their house. They’re about to be parents, and figured they’d throw one last big bash before the little’un arrives. Had a good time out there, even though I ended up having to grill up a pile of sausages because my brother is even more lazy than I and couldn’t be bothered to feed his guests. Hrmph! 🙂

Sunday I did nothing, absolutely nothing, and it was glorious. I spent the day watching the Netflix movies that Kelly had already seen, watching a lot of television, and just generally lounging around ignoring all the productive stuff I could have been doing (including blogging).

From then on, it’s been work work work. There’s a helluva lot to get done this week, and it’s stressing me out man! That aside, last night Kelly and I met with Kelly’s ex-coworker and her boyfriend at the Lucky Lab in Multnomah Village. I think I prefer the one on Hawthorne, but it was still a good time, and their pizza is good.

And tonight (right now, actually) Kelly and I are sitting here at the Mash Tun brewpub, both armed with our laptops, nerding the night away and having a good time doing it. 🙂

The weather has been VERY nice the past few days… cooler (in the 70’s) and rainy. After the nearly 100 degree heat from a couple weeks ago, it’s a welcome change. Anyway, that’s it for now. Hopefully I’ll be slightly less of a slacker… but don’t count on it… not until the workload lightens up.

  • Brews, Dogs, & Demons

Yoda at the Portland International BrewfestWhat a day. What a week! Work was crazy busy. On top of many other tasks however, I did get to do things like finalize a logo design, and then use that logo to design a t-shirt and a website… all for a developer community that’s set to launch in a couple weeks. Today however, the team I work with and I all fled the office early to go to the Portland International Brewfest to sample some beers. I was pleasantly surprised with the Sick Duck Imperial Stout, and was quite happy to see Coniston Brewing‘s Bluebird Bitter on tap. I spent most of my two hours there bouncing between those two beers, straying here and there to try out a few things.

Kelly picked me up just after 6pm, because we were set to meet some friends at the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne for dinner before going to a concert. Had a good time hanging out outside chatting, eating, and seeing all the cute dogs running around. Always a fun (though often loud) time at the Lucky Lab.

Point Juncture, WA at the Aladdin TheaterWe then went on to the Aladdin Theater, which I hadn’t been inside of for over 12 years. The opening band was Point Juncture, WA (yes, that’s the band name, and they’re from Portland), who were entertaining to watch. It was pretty clear while watching them that the quintet was having a good time, pretty much all smiles the whole show. Also, several members rotated instruments during the show. While at times they sounded a bit rough, I definitely enjoyed their show.

Talkdemonic at the Aladdin TheaterAfter the break, came the band that we were there to see, Talkdemonic. They put on a fantastic show, and introduced a LOT of new material. The crowd who’d all remained seated during Point Juncture, WA, were quickly on their feet, and the floor was filled with people swaying to the sounds that drummer / composer Kevin O’Connor and violist Lisa Molinaro poured into the theater. Fun show and a great way to end a great afternoon / evening.

  • What a show

Lightning show Tonight we had one heck of a lightning show! I hadn’t seen any forecasts of the storm so it was a bit of a surprise to see the dark clouds roll in and the flashes of light in the distance. Many of the strikes were directly overhead, leaving us with some house-shaking thunder. The show lasted for a lot longer than most seem to around here. Somewhere around 2 hours. Early on I’d grabbed my camera and started taking both still photos and some videos. The photo to the left is the one decent one I captured from the still shots. The video turned up some more, but I never managed to get a photo of the really impressive ones, and there were quite a few.

  • The Yard Working

I spent the better part of the day doing yardwork. Yeah, on Live Earth day I worked to mold nature to my designs. The irony isn’t lost on me. 🙂 While I was able to make the front yard look a lot better (edged the lawn, refreshed the barkdust by tilling it and re-spreading, levelled the bird bath, pulled weeds, etc) though nature will have it’s revenge… I’m already feeling sore, and I know tomorrow I’m going to be in pain. The real reason for all of the work is that we’re hosting a small BBQ tomorrow for family and friends for my sister-in-law and brother to celebrate their soon-to-be parenthood. Yup, pretty soon I’ll be "Uncle Ryan". Be scared, be very scared. Due to schedule conflicts, Kelly hasn’t been able to attend any of the other showers and decided that we should host a get-together at our place. The excuse of the BBQ has been good, as I’ve been meaning to work on the yard for several weeks now. Nothing like expecting company to spark action I suppose. Either way, I’ve accomplished a little over half of what I want to get done before the summer ends. Tired. So tired. *passes out*
