  • (the rest of) May, and April (so far)

The past month and (almost) a half, quick style:

March 17th (St Patty’s Day): Spent the evening at Moon & Sixpence with friends. First time there for St. Patty’s Day and it was a lot of fun. Live Irish music played in one corner, and loads of friendly people, all in good spirits despite how crowded it was.

March 27th: Got a lot of yard work done, and was able to break out the BBQ and do my first grill of the season. Great day ’round the house.

April 8th: Went in for some oral surgery to fix up some gum disease I’d developed over the years of not seeing a dentist (brush your teeth kids, and go in for your regular cleanings!). This led to a week of stitches, and about two weeks of discomfort. I’m only now starting to feel back to normal. I have a photo of the stitches I took with my MacBook’s camera, but I won’t show it since it might make you feel a bit ill.

April 17th: Did some more yard work including my first lawn mowing of the season. The work I’d been doing over the previous few weeks, coupled with some unusually warm spring weather has resulted in fast lawn growth. I also picked up a keg of the delicious Irish ale Kilkenny (which has only been available in the States for about a year). This means Guinness has been supplanted. Mmm, beer.

Today: I managed to tackle some of my chore list: repaired my busted up front fence gate (which involved replacing a slat, some sanding, painting, re-hanging, etc), installed some much needed shelving in the utility room, replaced some burnt-out light bulbs both on the front porch and the kitchen, cleaned some windows, and cleaned up the garage. Good, productive day.

Other stuff: I continue watching Lost, Fringe, FlashForward, Stargate Universe, and Doctor Who, and have seen a few decent films including Empire, Up In The Air, and Franklyn.

I also learned of a blog that’s worth adding to your RSS reader: Sleep Talkin’ Man. It’s about this English man who talks in his sleep, and his wife records / jots down some of the nonsense he mutters, leading to some awesome quotes such as:

    • “I’m gonna have a great day…. Don’t you fuck it up.”
    • “Headstands are for girls only. When they wear skirts.”
    • “If I’m gonna be in charge, I need a cape. You can’t do the job without a cape. Take me to the cape tailor.”
  • Take On Me – Literal Version

A coworker sent this my way a couple days ago, thought I’d share.

“I’m gonna kick some ass with my own pipe wrench”

  • Since the trip…

Since the last post, I had a nice end of my two week vacation. A couple relaxing days that allowed me to get back into our timezone. During that time I also discovered that Belmont Station carries the Bruges beer that Kelly and I had much of on our trip, Brugse Zot, so I picked up a couple bottles of that. Hooray!

Last Wednesday Kelly and I had M & B over for dinner, to thank them for watching over our house and our cat, and I figured that would be as good a time as any to tap my keg of Guinness. The countdown begins. Tapping it proved to be more complicated than I’d thought. The first problem was that I hadn’t tightened the stout faucet all the way, and when I first went to lock the tap on, beer sprayed everywhere. Damn! Once I’d fixed that, the tap wouldn’t lock down easily (making me wonder for a bit whether I’d picked up the wrong tap). Finally realized that it just needed a bit more ‘elbow grease’ than other taps, and finally got the delicious black stuff flowing Yum!

Kelly and I went out to my hometown on Friday after work for a belated birthday dinner for Kelly. We went to this newly opened Chinese place, the food was mediocre, but it was still a nice dinner. Afterwards we drove to my folks place for dessert (ice cream cake, yum!) and I got to spend time playing with my rapidly growing nephew, Bart. After getting home I had a couple pints of Guinness (naturally) while getting distracted by this Comcast site Fancast, where you can watch full episodes of TV shows… I ended up watching some of the original Battlestar Galactica. I hadn’t seen it in many, many years.

Last night we went out with Mr. & Mrs. Ghost Dog to the Goose Hollow Inn for delicious sandwiches and beers, before coming back to our house for a bit. Had a great time, and it’d been quite some time since we’d seen the GDs.

Today, finally, the unseasonably cold and rainy weather broke, and Kelly and I were able to spend a few hours outside doing yardwork. Soon, we’ll be grilling some chicken kabobs on the barbecue. Hooray!

Between all this, was a crazy first week back to work. Loads to do in the next few weeks for the next software release. Gonna be nuts.

Oh, also, discovered a new web comic, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal. Enjoy.

Edited to add one more thing: My friend and coworker Aaron recently blogged about this news site The Big Picture, where I found this photo/article about an uncontacted tribe in Brazil. Really found the photos amazing, imagine not being in contact with the ‘modern’ world and having a helicopter buzzing around your tribe’s camp. What must have been going through their minds.

  • My brother’s ‘Golf Hunting’ video

My brother T and a friend of his created a little video (which he wanted me to blog about, so here I am), a little parody mashup about a golfer, Trip Isenhour, who’s fateful golf ball hit an endangered hawk, and landed him in some trouble. Pretty clever mix of a couple different games. A bit sick in the head, but that’s my brother. 🙂

    Watch the vid at YouTube.

  • You see it?

So a few weeks ago when the news of Heath Leger’s death hit the interwebs, and the news of whatever oddness between he, the maid, and Mary-Kate Olsen surfaced, ABC News.com posted a photo of Heath and MK side by side. I saw the photo and immediately thought of how creepy MK looked, and how similar to someone else, though I couldn’t place it.

I saved the photo and then waited for my brain to turn over. Finally it hit me… in the photo she looked like Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas.

    Sally vs. Mary-Kate

C’mon, you see it right? CRRREEEEEEEPYYYYY

PS: I feel sick right now, might be coming down with a flu, so perhaps the above isn’t as funny as I think. Going to hop my bus home now, and then go to bed…

  • Working for the weekend

After two whole days of work I’m already pooped, however it was a good couple days. My energy level was at 11 (versus the usual wavering between 6 and 9) from all the time off. I wish I could have a week off every couple weeks to re-energize. It does the brain good.

For some late Friday fun, be sure to check out this post by my friend Snooks. It will make you smile. No, seriously. It WILL make you smile. Unless there’s something wrong with you.

  • Best thang evar!

While trying to catch up on my RSS feed reading tonight, I came across something while reading the blog of a local beer lover’s heaven Belmont Station that is, really, the BEST THANG EVAR!

    Check it!

    You won’t be disappointed. 🙂

  • Gratuitous Amounts of Energy

This is the best thing ever. Don’t argue with me, I’ve got ENERGY LEGS!

Found this during lunch today via this blog post. Hilarious stuff, though Powerthirst is probably the best one.

    MENERGY

  • How to be the perfect girlfriend

Saw this video via Digg.com just now. Hilarious (and yet, oddly accurate).

    Yup, still slacking off. 🙂
