Baby Max is here!

This morning, December 26th at 8:12am, Kelly and I welcomed our son

Max!

to the world. The stats for those who like that stuff: 21.5″ long, and weighed in at 7 lbs 10 oz. Both Kelly and the baby are doing well despite an unplanned (but entirely warranted) cesarean after 9 hours of rough labor. Kelly is resting comfortably, and the little man is chilling out (when he’s not being prodded and poked by the hospital staff over a concern of a chest infection or something).

After getting up early Saturday for Christmas, going out to my folks, and then visiting some of Kelly’s family who are staying in Oregon City, we got home around 9pm last night. Around 10pm Kelly started feeling some early labor pains, by midnight had suddenly and intensely progressed, and by 2am we were in the hospital room and Kelly was in some seriously intense active labor.

Within two hours she had progressed from 3cm to 7cm dilated, all w/o any pain meds (Kelly is made of steel and lava and diamonds). Then the progress stopped, and for another couple hours of incredibly rough and painful labor w/o any progression Kelly decided to get an epidural (which was a relief for me to see her agony vanish). The doctor did some checking and realized that the reason the progression halted was that the little man was coming out a bit cockeyed (chin wasn’t to chest and was going through slightly turned) and Kelly’s pelvis was likely not going to be large enough anyway. Combined with some distress on the child (reduced heartbeat) when Kelly was going through a contraction and it was decided the best (and probably only) choice for the boy was to go under the knife.

I’d never been put in scrubs and walked into an operating room with my wife on the table before (and I really hope I don’t have to again) but the procedure was quick, and before we knew it there was a new little person in the world.

For the next couple hours we waited in the recovery room, and then around 11:30 were moved back to our birthing suite. Max has had some blood drawn and an x-ray of his chest taken (not sure the results yet) but his breathing has improved so it seems he’ll be fine (fingers crossed). I guess some respiratory issues are common in cesarean births, but the staff here at Good Sam aren’t taking any chances (and I really appreciate it).

After being up for 31 hours I finally dozed off for a nap on the sofa for a couple hours, and now Max is dozing happily on Kelly’s chest while we watch Trading Places on cable.

Anyway, I’m sure there will be more posts, but I’m going to try and avoid smothering my blog with stuff about my boy (for the same reason I’ll not be posting his every move on Facebook). I hope to give him a sense of privacy as he grows older. He’ll probably be considered ‘off the grid’ by the time he’s a teen if his every moment isn’t published publicly on the interwebs. Good. 🙂

Winter solstice (hooray) and more important stuff

Winter solstice is finally upon us (the end is nigh for these lame early nights/short days) and since it’s been such a long time between posts, here’s an update of what’s been going on the past few months.

Kelly and I went to the coast again in late October with a group of friends (split the rent on an awesome house in Lincoln City near Roads End State Park that Aymie found, thanks again Aymie!) and had a blast, despite the stormy weather that weekend.

Around the same time, I turned 36. Hooray or whatever. The big news from this was that I finally took the plunge (with a big, helpful push from Kelly and the rest of my family) and got an iPhone (4). No more cheap, crappy Virgin Mobile ‘pay as you go’ phone for me. Now I can retire my iPod Touch and post inane crap to Twitter anytime I want without having to hunt for a WiFi signal. Yay for everyone!

In late November I had an awning installed on my back patio (pic here), which will be nice come spring when it’s rainy but warm-ish again. Kelly and I also painted the dining room and several other rooms in the house (keep reading).

Work has been extra hectic the past few months, which is one reason I haven’t written in a while. I’m off work for a few weeks though, for reasons that will become apparent shortly.

Last night was a lunar eclipse, which we couldn’t see due to the cloud cover and rain.

Today we got hardwoods installed in the dining room, and they look awesome (pic here). If you’re in the market, Floor Factors does excellent work.

Another big reason I’m finally writing after such a long gap, Kelly and I are expecting our first child (a boy!) to be born any moment. Due date is/was today! So far the little man has remained content in Kelly’s tummy and isn’t in a hurry to join us in the world. I can’t blame him to be honest. It’s probably very nice in the womb, all warm and squishy. However, Kelly (and I) are getting ready for him to come out and say hello.

Over the past few months we’ve got his room cleared out, painted and decorated, and got the crib and co-sleeper set up. Also, due to the extreme generosity of friends and family, we’ve received a load of clothes, diapers, toys, a rocker chair for Kelly to nurse with, two strollers and an infant car seat which we barely we squeezed into our Scion xA. We’re ready to go!

Any day now (hopefully before Christmas) he’ll decide he’s fully cooked. Otherwise we go in to start the induction process at midnight on December 26th.

Weekend at the coast

This weekend Kelly took me to the coast for a surprise weekend getaway. She’d rented a house near Manzanita, and we spent a couple days driving around, visiting nearby spots including spending some of Saturday at Cannon Beach, hiking through Oswald West State Park, and on Sunday checking out Hug Point (my new favorite stretch of Oregon beach).

Had a really tasty burger and a few pints of Guinness at the Sand Dune Pub on Friday night, and a delicious Shrimp Scampi dinner at the Terra Cotta Cafe on Saturday evening, right before racing down to see what little sunset there was left.

It was really great to get away for a couple nights, and we got back with a Monday holiday day off to spare (so I could chill out around the house before returning to work). Thanks so much Kelly, it was fantastic!

Camping trip to Wahtum Lake

This past weekend I joined some friends on a camping trip (to celebrate my friend S’s upcoming 40th birthday) at Wahtum Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest, a drive of about two hours from Portland.

We arrived around 2pm Friday, set up camp, and set about sipping on beers and roasting hot dogs over the fire. Saturday morning we took a two mile hike up Chinidere Mountain for an incredible 360 view of the mountain range and snow-covered peaks including Hood, Rainier, St. Helens, Adams and Jefferson.

The hike about destroyed me however, and I hit the tent early Saturday night. Sunday morning we all got up early, made coffee and relaxed for a few hours before breaking down camp and headed home, stopping at Double Mountain brewpub in Hood River for some delicious pizza and beer. Great camping trip. However my calf muscles still hate me.

Long week, short weekend

After a long week getting up to speed on work for the next software release (including many, many meetings), the weather started to drastically improve here in Portland Friday a friend of mine came by for some BBQ and beers. Had a really fun night, followed by a slightly painful yesterday.

I got up and watched several episodes of Top Gear before Kelly and I went to the Blue Olive for dinner, followed by checking out the Oregon Symphony perform Beethoven. The performance was fantastic, though the dinner had me feeling a bit too full and sleepy. After the show we dropped by the Back Stage Bar for our friend B’s birthday. Didn’t stay long though. Sleepy. Happy birthday B! We suck.

After an early night and many hours of sleep I was able to get some serious yard work done today, mainly cleaning up the pile of debris that sat to one side/corner of the house. It was the spot where two years of Christmas trees/wreaths, many years of potting soil and planters, and general yard junk had been dumped. Hacking, sawing, digging, and barkdust re-spreading. It looks, well, not trashy now. After all that, I’ve been able to sit out on the front porch with a couple beers and, well, write this post. Hooray for spring!
