Ski day & a party in the woods

Friday SuperSweetCo took the company up to Mount Hood Meadows for a ski/team-building day. We had to get downtown to the office by 7:20am to get on the bus, aiming for a 7:30am departure time. Thankfully, Kelly was able to drive me in and we left the house pretty much as planned to get to the bus on time, but about a quarter of the way in I realized I'd left my phone on the dresser so we had to turn around and rush back home. I was going to need it for this weekend, so it wasn't an option to leave it. Fortunately, while I was late, I wasn't holding the bus up, as others were still filing in as I got there. Whew!

The bus departed at about 7:40am and shortly thereafter, out came the beers and booze, and while I just sipped my coffee, the ride was a fun one. We also got to watch one of my favorite movies on the way up. On Thursday, one of my managers had asked me what would be a good movie to watch on the bus's entertainment system. I said "well, if you're going skiing, you've gotta watch Better Off Dead", a classic 80's movie starring John Cusack. My manager replied "Oh man, do you have that on DVD? Bring it!" It was a hit on the bus… many people hadn't seen that film in years, and some had never seen it before.

We arrived at the mountain at about 9:45am, rushed to our private room (the Finish Line) in the North Lodge to drop our stuff off, and then run down to the rental area to pick up our rental gear and head out for whatever lessons we'd signed up for. SuperSweetCo was covering the rentals and lessons, so I decided (with a little push from Kelly, heh) to try my hand at snowboarding. I got my gear on and head outside to begin my lessons. The instructor was very friendly and patient (a 58 year old man who started snowboarding when he was 40), and I was able to pick certain things quickly (turns), and other things slowly (stopping without falling). I fell a few times, once fairly hard, but I kept at it. After about an hour we took the lift up the 'bunny slope' and practiced all the things we were taught (turning, stopping, 'falling leaf') and by the end of the lesson I was starting to get the hang of it, but I was getting exhausted. Having to stand with knees half-bent for 2 hours was giving me wobbly legs, so by the time the lesson ended I was done, and it was time for lunch.

I got up to the room at about 12:30pm, met up with Ghost Dog (who took the day off to ski and was invited to hang out with us), ate a bit of food and sipped on a beer. I was feeling totally spent, so I didn't go back out. Instead I relaxed and chatted with other coworkers who were spending the afternoon hanging out. Around 2:00pm we found out that one of our crew had smashed into a tree and broken his arm in three places (yikes!) but despite everything he seemed to be doing OK. Some of my coworkers played 'speed quarters' up until they all had to file on the bus at 4:00pm to get back to Portland.

This wasn't the end for me however, Ghost Dog gave me a ride off the mountain so I could meet up with some friends. A good friend Tyson is getting married at the end of this month, and his friend rented a cabin for the weekend outside of Rhododendron. Got to the cabin a little after 5:30pm, unpacked, and started in on the beer drinking. There were about 11 people there at one point, including Tyson's father and two brothers. Lots of food, music, games, and of course, drinking. I was totally exhausted from the snowboarding, and held on for as long as I could (apparently about midnight) before having to go sleep in the cabin's open loft, while everybody else kept on going until 4:30am or so. Apparently everybody was surprised that I kept sleeping through all the loud partying, but I was dead to the world.

I woke up to beautiful sunny morning around 9:45am, feeling pretty sore but refreshed, and despite the beer count I had no hangover, unlike everybody else. 🙂 I helped clean up the mess, did some dishes, and helped Tyson cook up some breakfast. Nothing like some bacon, fried eggs, and toast to set you right in the morning! One of the group was heading back to town at around 1:30pm so I got a ride home early. I wanted one night in my own bed, and one full day at home before starting another work week, but it was a really fun time at the cabin. I had a great time, but I'm now feeling VERY sore all over.

Friends at Rose & Thistle

Went out this evening to Rose & Thistle with Miranda & Brian, and Mr. & Mrs. Ghost Dog. It had been a while since Kelly and I had gotten together with these kids, especially the Ghost Dogs. Had a great time catching up, chatting about all manner of things, from Lost, to Battlestar Galactica, to the headaches of driving in our local metro traffic hell. I have to mention the dish I had for dinner, the 'Charles Stuart (Chuck)', sort of a chicken & gravy pasty, with mashed potatos and veggies… very delicious. Near midnight Kelly and I caught our bus homeward, stopping at Binks for a final drink or two before walking home. Great night, and a perfect end to a productive weekend day. If only I had my millions, I'd be able to have this kind of day EVERY day. 🙂

Weekend report

Well, week w/o posting again. Here's a quick recap. Tuesday I met Snooks at Kennedy School for a little bit, finally feeling well enough by this point that I needed to go out and have a couple beers. Thursday, met up with Snooks again, and my brother Travis, at Moon & Sixpence. Hadn't been there in a little while, and they had finally gotten Smithwick's in again (a really delicious Irish ale, slightly on the malty side, and overall quite delicious).

Yesterday was the last day for a coworker of mine (sniff) who is leaving SuperSweetCo to pursue a writing career. After work the company threw a happy hour in the break room (people mixing 'chocolate martinis') for my departing comrade. At around 6pm Kelly joined us when she got into town, and by 7pm it was down to about 7 of us. Most of my coworkers decided to go get sushi, but my manager wanted everybody to meet later at Moon & Sixpence. I figured, "Two nights in a row at Moon? Sure, no problem!" so Kelly and I went straight there, got a table and got some dinner. My coworkers were to meet us at about 9pm. By 9:45 they still hadn't arrived and Kelly and I were feeling pretty tired (probably a combination of the long work week, the beers, and the food). We waited until about 10pm before we bailed, and I texted my manager to let him know. He texted me back, I guess they were just on their way, and said something about dinner taking forever (can it really take that long to eat food that doesn't even have to spend any time cooking? hehe), but by that point we were on the road for home.

I fell asleep on the couch at around 11pm, and stayed there until I woke up in this really uncomfortable position at about 4am.

I've spent the day cleaning and organizing my office, and getting all my paperwork in order for the dreaded taxes that I need to get done. Kelly and I are going out this evening to Rose & Thistle with Miranda & Brian and Mr. & Mrs. Ghost Dog. Looking forward to it, and hope we can last the night out without having a yawn attack. 🙂

Company party, and more sick?

The weather today was fantastic (60 degrees and sunny) so I finally spent some time in the yard, doing some much needed pruning of the roses. Lots more to do, but at least I've made some headway.

Tonight my place of employment threw a big party at a downtown club called Aura, to both celebrate the launch of all the new products, as well as to celebrate the company's 6th anniversary. Happy news all around. I've been recovering from my cold, and felt pretty well ready to party the night away. The company provided taxi vouchers so Kelly and I could be safe and have a paid ride to the party and back. Excellent.

For the party, the company rented out Aura for a few hours, where we would have food and drink provided. Kelly and I arrived shortly after 7pm and were halted at the door "this is a private party" … to which I replied "yeah, I work there"… I think the girl at the door wasn't quite sure how to ask "are you with the private party?" SuperSweetCo should have provided employees with a password or super secret handshake or something. Oh well. The place itself was pretty "hip", with lots of modern stylings. The music was blippy and loud, the lighting was low with bright, focused lights and trippy video displayed on a large screen dividing the space in two, a seating towards the front and a dance area towards the back. Pretty interesting spot, though nothing I'd likely go to normally.

Kelly and I got a couple drinks (bottle of Guinness for me, blueberry martini for Kelly) and wandered towards the back where all the food was set up. They had many of the things on their menu out on a few tables, and Kelly and I snacked a bit. I tried their mini chicken burger, and both their beef and chicken skewers while Kelly had their gigantic prawns with cocktail sauce. Spent a bit of time chatting with coworkers and then suddenly started not feeling so well. "Great" I thought, while I tried to ignore it, continue hanging out, and having another 2 beers (an Amstel Light and another Guinness). Finally, at around 9:15pm my stomach wasn't feeling well at all, and Kelly and I left. I was very bummed, because the party was really just getting going when we left.

We got home just after 10pm, and Kelly and I took to the sofa and watched some TV (a NetFlix disc we'd recently received, Black Books, a hilarious British comedy) where I found myself freezing cold. I went to bed at around 11pm, shivering violently until I fell asleep. I woke up today (sunday) feeling mostly fine, but still taking it easy. Not sure what happened, perhaps it was the food, but either way, I'm none too pleased.

Back from the dead, mostly

Well, as of Wednesday I've been back at work, and mostly finished with my cold. It's still hanging on, and I'm getting the feeling that it will be for some time. I'm still tired (usually asleep by 10:00pm) still have a bit of a stuffy head and cough, but at least I'm no longer incapacitated, and can breathe through my nose! (hooray!)

Wednesday evening Kelly and I went out to Veritable Quandary for dinner. VQ is a nice place, with a good wine selection (apparently) and a decent beer selection. It's a little spendy (expect to spend about $70 per couple, which includes dinner, maybe a dessert, and a couple drinks) but it's got a nice atmosphere and our server was very friendly and helpful. I had a very good caesar salad, a couple pints of beer (memory already fading on what it was, but I was still a bit sick so I don't remember tasting much), and what I thought was going to be an appetizer pizza (ended up being about 10") with a very salty thin-sliced meat called capicola (coppa on the menu). By about 9:15 I was feeling exhausted, and full and arrived home just in time for me to hit the pillow before I fell asleep. Romantic, I know. 🙂

Last night I met my friend Jenn at Mash Tun for a little bit, and later Kelly met me there after she finished with a meeting with some of her classmates for her MBA. Like the night before, I started fading pretty early.

Tonight Kelly's at class, and has class all day tomorrow. I'm just relaxing, letting my body continue to fight the evil. If the forecast holds and it actually is partly sunny and 56 degrees tomorrow, I may try to spend some time working on the yard. It's a mess!
